A Few Fun Photos From the Children's Museum
I grouped these photos together because (a.) they were all taken at the Pittsburgh Children's Museum and (b.) they are taken from a different perspective than portrait photography. Note the varied focus and depth of field. Admittedly, most of what I captured happened by accident!

When Black and White Works
I like black & white photos just as much as everyone else, but sometimes, it falls a little flat. I find that black and white works best when there are clear differences in color shading, light and shadow, and it never hurts to throw in a bit of metal to really make a b & w image work. These pictures were taken at Toby's 3rd birthday party, most of which were on or around a shiny firetruck the neighbor/fire chief drove over for the party!

Hands, Eyes
I read a tip that said when photographing children, focus on individual body parts like hands and feet.
Toby
Toby's mom asked me to take a picture of him, so I took advantage of his jovial mood while we were eating lunch at Olive Garden. He was seated in front of a window, which was great, but provided too much light. I closed the blind to allow difussed sunlight to come through.

Adding Editing
This young man's portrait was fairly straightforward. He was old enough to easily be positioned, he followed my instructions, but mainly I took cues from him. I decided to play around with the color options during editing, to strike a balance between the nice young man that he is, and the skull-covered shirt he was wearing that was a bit more edgy.
